The library was organized December 13, 1939, and it opened March 25, 1940. The library was formed in a vacant room in the old Cherokee County High School with 202 books. On October 1, 1943, the library was moved to the American Legion Hall.
In 1950, Legionaries objected to the Legion Hall being used for library service. They moved the library into two rooms in the courthouse basement. In 1966, the library moved into four rooms in the courthouse annex basement.
In 1970, the library had out-grown its facilities. Miss Ethel Morrison deeded two and one-half acres on May Street for the new building site. The dedication of the new building and open house was on January 26, 1975.
